Thirsty Pig Cooking, Unknown
Thirsty Pig cooking - three different dishes. Recently I bought a Le Creuset pot and I made Mac and cheese, mapo tofu, and curry chicken. All of them tasted great! . . . .
Thirsty Pig cooking - three different dishes. Recently I bought a Le Creuset pot and I made Mac and cheese, mapo tofu, and curry chicken. All of them tasted great! . . . .
Got a second chance to have curry with katsu. This time delicatessen by Osawa did not disappoint. Curry was flavorful and the katsu was ideal. The seared cod and sukiyaki was also very good as well. We also had the chicken karage, which was gobbled up quite fast. Yum yum. Glad this place is not far from home. Thanks to for introducing this place to us . . . . . .
Double Cheese Smashed Burger from Burgers Never Say Die. Pretty solid burger with an interesting crunchy texture from the thin burger patties. I like it. But the burgers seem small in portion. I should have considered ordering two. Their price seems a bit high for a single order of their “regular” burger. Their fries are just ok - but generous in portion. This place is popular from youtubers. Would I go again? Yes. Do I recommend? Yes. Would I drive this far again just for it - maybe. . . . . .
Looks may be deceiving. Had a really bad meal at May’s Chinese Restaurant in Arcadia. Food was a big NG - No Good. I should have known. The ownership has changed so many times, the menu feature Taiwanese and Japanese dishes - who does that?, and the place was half empty. Ugh. I had the curry pork cutlet over an omelette rice. The curry tasted grainy and lacked flavor. The soup was also terrible. Please do not go. Please. . . . .
Yet another Boba Tea Shop. We were actually looking for boba ice cream bars - but they were sold out and had a one week wait for new orders. Crazy!! . . . .
Boba drinks at Class 302. Taiwanese restaurant that offers Taiwanese comfort food with drinks and desserts. Only had drinks this time. I had the milk with brown sugar boba and egg custard. Not bad. But I will probably lay off milk in the future. Trying to go non-diary for awhile. The cups a gigantic and with cute designs. . . . . .
Seolleongtang on a chilly December day. Not that chilly today in Southern Cal but regardless it’s still a good and hearty. Seolleongtang is a Korean beef and glass noodle soup. We had the beef brisket one and I had the galbi one. When you order yours make sure you add the salt, pepper, scallions, and rice into the bowl. Don’t forget the kimchi juice, kimchi juice. . . . . .
Brown sugar deeriocra (fresh milk/fresh soy) and orange lulu earl grey with orange. The Alley is another chinese or Taiwanese imported boba tea shop. To me they are all the same. Very hard for me to tell the difference from one shop to another. . . . . .usa .la
Taiwanese breakfast at Yi Mei. Rice Ball 飯糰 with an egg. Had the egg pancake 蛋皮 and fried dumplings. Yi Mei is one of the better Taiwanese breakfast restaurants. . . . . .
Ramen. Had the black kotteri ramen, with fatty rich broth. It had a good taste/flavor. But the texture, yes inside the soup, had a grainy mouth feel - not too pleasant. Unfortunate the inari has warm rice. I’m not a fan of warm rice in my Inari. Won’t return. . . . . .
Sichuan lunch with old friends. Finally got a chance to visit Szechuan Impression. Had the spicy boiled fish, sausage, veggies, pork belly with rice flour, mapo tofu. Crazy spicy with the Sichuan peppercorn. 花椒. Mouth numbing feel. Interesting they had a bunch of different dishes from different regions of China. Those dishes had a twist with their interpretation with Sichuan influences. I like the small cozy space, was very inviting. . . . . .
Tiger Sugar. Taiwanese boba or pearl milk tea. . . . . .usa .usa
Peanut Butter Mochi from J.J. Bakery. I was expecting peanut powder instead of peanut butter. If I am not mistaken the peanut powder is a more traditional filling and has better flavor. The peanut butter tasted a bit bland. . . . . .
Beef Noodle Soup at 一條龍 PP Pop. I had the Taiwanese spicy Beef Noodle Soup with pickle vegetables. Quite spicy and tasty. We also had the tan tan noodles, beef and tendon soup with vermicelli, and fried pork buns 生煎包. Interesting 一條龍 used to be the name of a restaurant on valley Blvd with the English name Dragon Mark, which was a favorite of mine a long time ago. It appears this place “borrowed” their name. . . . . .
Beijing Roast Duck 北京烤鴨 at the Duck House. Haven’t had duck in a long time. We had the half duck with the crispy skin. They provided the thin rice paper wrappers as opposed to the thick buns (which I prefer). The duck soup was savory and flavorful. The thinly sliced translucent pork belly was perfect with the garlic sauce. The glass noodles, sesame sauce lettuce, and jelly fish was good, also. The last dish the eel over sticky rice was also a stand out. Restaurant building looked like it was an old bank. I think the Duck House has been around a long time, just never had the chance to try. I’m glad I did. . . . . .
Oyaku Don, Udon, and Saba. Suehiro is Little Tokyo’s Japanese Denny’s. Love this place. Can always good Japanese comfort dishes. They good rice dishes, ramen, and other dishes. Open Late. But parking sucks - only paid lots and barely any street parking available. . . . . . .
Rotisserie chicken and Tri-tip shawarma plate from Zankou Chicken. Haven’t had the beef, since we usually have the chicken. Their famed garlic sauce/paste is something that you must ask for. Make sure you ask for it!!! The tahni sauce is also really good, as is the hummus and pita. If you haven’t gone to zankou. You gotta go. . . . .
Adobada Tacos at Tacos 1986 in DTLA. Also had the carne asada Vampiros. The pork adobadas reminded us of the flavors of Taiwanese braised pork 滷肉. I think adobadas would go great on a bowl of rice. Yummy. Also good to have some Topo Chico, Mexican Sparkling Water. First stop of the DTLA Taco Crawl! . . . .
Baked Chicken at Love Baked Wings on Melrose. Still with a nice crackle but without the greasy fried crust. I first had baked chicken in Seoul at Oppadak with a couple of local elementary school teachers. Loved the baked concept with the dry seasonings and especially liked the dipping sauces. Their spicy is crazy spicy! Unfortunately their lemon rub is a bit too sour. Read that the chef used to be personal chef. Would recommend and want to visit again soon. I hope they build one in Pasadena. . . . .
Chorizo and Steak Tacos from Sonoratown in DTLA. Excellent tortillas and the chorizo was awesome. Wish they had a pork option. The beef chimichanga was also yummy - just enough spice. I would visit again. 2nd Stop of the Taco Crawl DTLA. Omg I am so full!!! . . . .
Pork Terrine Taco and Baja Shrimp Taco from Guerrilla Tacos. Third and last stop of the Taco Crawl in DTLA. Yummy. Tasty and more messy. Good flavor and texture. Love my pork tacos. . . . .
Tianjin Jian Bing at the Sunday Alhambra Farmers Market. Woo’s Crepe makes a traditional Tianjin Jian Bing. It’s a bit different from the Jian Bing I’m used to from shanghai. They fry the egg on the outside of the crepe. They also used, what I assume, is tortilla chips instead of crisps they usually use. Sometimes they used a youtiao. They also added some sliced hotdogs, which I thought was peculiar. . . . . .
Galbi Jim at SBD BBQ. Seong Buk Dong from Koreantown has come to the SGV. Known as SBD Korean Bbq - they offer their traditional dishes, that made them well known, but also offering DIY kbbq. Their Galbi Jjim sauce is outstanding but it appears that the quality of beef rib could have been of high quality and more tender. We also had the spicy Galbi Jjim, cold noodles, kimchi Jeon, spicy pork, tofu soup. I really liked the kimchi jeon - the kimchi pancake. . . . .🍖
Taiwanese Breakfast Burrito. 飯糰 and egg pancake. This was my daily breakfast when I lived in Taipei. Must have the fried egg. Only with the curlers 油條 was more crispy. Other than that it was good. Also had the savory soy milk, also with curlers 油條. . . . .
Yet another . . . Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, this time from Old Country Cafe 老鄉親. The broth was ok, not overly flavorful or slightly spicy as one would expect. It appeared to be cloudy, which isn’t a good thing. The soup had an already acidic taste from the pickled mustard greens, in which I would have liked to add personally - depending on my taste. The beef chucks were tender with some nice chewy tendons. But they were smaller in size compared to the other bowls, I’ve had this week. The overall taste was there but not up to par compared to others. The Taiwanese sausage didn’t have the look or taste that Sinabala had - which has the best Taiwanese Sausage around. I would still Vivi at again, but I would probably order something else. Interesting, there used to be an Old Country Cafe, also 老鄉親, on Garfield in Alhambra - which is no longer there. They said they aren’t the same owners as the old one. But it appears they almost copied everything they had, including having a few comic books for people to read. . . . .
Queso-Tacos, hard shell beef tacos with cheese. And the Quesa-birria, the beef and cheese quesadilla. Also had the beef consume dipping sauce/soup. I was in the area and I thought I should try Birrieria San Marcos. Luckily I got there before the crowd. The tacos and quesadilla was tasty and savory, but not too savory. You really don’t need additional hot sauce or onions - it was fine the way it was. The unique dipping sauce is, what I think, makes Birrieria San Marcos stand out. I glad they choose to do something others don’t do. It is tough in the LA market to stand out. Anyways, I’m glad I got to go. I would certainly go again and would recommend. . . . . .
Pizza at CPK. Garlic Chicken Pizza on cauliflower crust and the “Works” Pizza. This place never disappoints. Consistency and interesting. You don’t find these topping combinations typically at other places . . . .
More Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup. Tonight we ventured to Sinbala for a pipping hot bowl. The noodles were slightly over cooked and too soft. The soup was nice and spicy, but not too spicy. They already added the pickled mustard greens, which I wished they didn’t. Anyways, I would order it again here but it wouldn’t be my first choice. Their Taiwanese sausage might be the best in the area. . . . .
Lunch at Golden Deli. Pho, spring rolls, and rolls. Yummy! . . .
Pizza! Sapori Di in Altadena. They have a nice pizza oven hearth and they serve up some pretty good pizza. The crust had a nice texture and chew. I really liked it! . . . .
Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup! Might still be the best in Southern California. Wifey had the pig knuckle and rice. Unfortunate the sides were not so good - sausage, tofu skin, and cucumber. The hot hearty soup had great savory spicy seasoned flavor. Great on a chilly day. . . . .
Another Ramen Shop popped up in Arcadia. DashiWa Ramen. The broth and noodles were good. I had the black garlic tonkotsu ramen and it was pretty good. Unfortunately the chasu tasted oily and didn’t have the texture I was expecting and was cut really too thin. But at least they did the broth and noodles right. The inari unusually had warm rice - which in my book is a big No-No. And the chicken karaage was too greasy. Unfortunately, I can recommend, not will I return. But it appears that DashiWa Ramen will be fine without me, since they cater to the local lunch crowd. But if you do go, just have the their ramen, no need for their sides. . . .
Lunch with buds. Plan Check’s patty melt, burger, and asian salad. Yum! . . . .
Holy Roly ice cream. Peanut butter Reese’s ice cream. Interesting dessert but it takes a bit of time for each order. I think half the experience is watching them make it. Slab, spread, scrap, enjoy. . . . .
Late night meal in DTLA at the Original Pantry Cafe. Breakfast all day and night. Country fried steak and eggs with potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, and chicken noodle soup. I love this place. I like going on weekends and having breakfast at the counter. Hate the long lines. . . . .
Little gifts from wife. Wife went to Bordeaux and Madrid. Can’t wait to try it! . . . .
Liang Pi 凉皮, Beef Noodle Soup, and Rou Jia Mo at Qin West. I asked for mild Liang Pi and my mouth was on fire. FIRE - I say! But it was good. I must and always have to have the Rou Jia Mo 肉夾饃. . . . .
Taiwanese dinner at Monja Taiker. The shaved ice with soft boiled peanuts and condensed milk is my favorite combination. We also had the fried red pork on rice, chicken roll on rice, Taiwanese sausage on rice, and spicy wontons. Unfortunately the rice was too sticky (too much water). Other than that, we liked everything. I think we would return. . . . . .
Japanese Sandwiches at Pillow Talk in Pasadena. Pretty good sandwiches. I like the hot tamago egg sandwich the best. The egg salad sandwich with the hard boiled egg was also very good. Heck anything with egg I will probably like. The avocado mango sandwich was surprisingly not bad - and I don’t crave avocados. The tiramisu drink was interesting - probably won’t order it again. Other than that I like these sandwiches and would gladly return and recommend. Who cares what and all those others say if they feel Pillow Talk allegedly copied Konbi certainly didn’t invent these sandwiches, they were one of the first to copy them from Asia. . . . .
. Ramen! . . . . .
Watching my Cleveland Browns play at SF 49ers, at Levi’s Stadium. Too bad the Browns lost. Had a great time. Great seats. Awesome 49er crowd. . . . .
Enjoying the Saints game at the Voodoo lounge. Abita beer, cider, and a bunch of bloody Mary’s. . . . ⚜️
Thai dinner at Summer Summer Thai. Summer roll, crab Rangoon, corn fritters, pork steak, beef, and curry noodles. Yummy. Summer rolls make you feel less guilty. Could eat almost everyday. . . . .
Simple Dinner at Sinbala. Fried pork chop on rice and pork belly on rice. Sinbala is a small popular Taiwanese Restaurant. They also have traditional Taiwanese shaved ice, where you can pick and choose your toppings. Nowadays, most shaved ice joints have pre-set combinations, often times with stuff you don’t like. . . . .
Cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory. Adams’s Peanut Butter Cup Fudge Ripple Cheesecake. Had the flat bread and salad lunch and thai salad wraps. Guilty pleasures. . . . .
This is how you enjoy a Moscow Mule at Dodger Stadium. With Souvenir Cup - twenty five bucks. A bit pricey, but it is pretty awesome! 😎 . . . .
Pasadena Greek Fest. Gyros, Souvlakia, Baklava, and chicken souvlaki. Yum. The Gyros are awesome!!! Going on all weekend 9/20-22 . . . .
Pink’s. If you haven’t heard of Pink’s you just gotta go. If you haven’t BEEN to Pink’s - what’s wrong with ya??? Spicy polish dog with chili and chili cheese fries with onion. What could be better at Pink’s??? . . . .
Barbecue chicken pizza and jerk chicken pizza with cauliflower crust at California Pizza Kitchen. I’ve always liked this place. I remember my first visit in the early 90s at the Beverly Center location. I thought it was pretty good. Looking at there recent menu - I was wondering where their Peking Duck pizza was??? Anyways. Good place. Would return. Their bake and take promo is pretty good. Take home an I baked pizza for $5 is a good deal. . . . .
Carnitas Nachos and Carnitas Quesadillas, second dinner/snack. Yum. Good food and good time, telling lies. . . . .
Enjoying a Dodger game. Tampa Bay Rays at the Dodgers. Looking forward to see Tony Gonsolin pitch! . . . .
Big Ben Combo at Pie n’Burger. I don’t remember having the burger here. I think I always came for breakfast or just pie. But this time, was Burger time. It was a truly good experience. Juicy, almost to a fault. With the crisp lettuce to break up the rich cheesy double patty burger - was ideal. I know a few people would like a burger to be meat cheese and bread - no veggies. But you need the pickles, lettuce, and even the tomato to complete the whole taste and mouth feel. And I think pie n’Burger did just that. The thin diner style patty was what I just wanted. is right about the thin patty. And I also love burgers! was right! . . . .
Garlicky Tonkotsu Ramen at Hironiro Craft Ramen. Nice char on the chasu pork. Rich flavorful and garlicky flavor. Spicy, too. The shoyu ramen looked good too. The fried chicken appetizer was juicy. Ate too fast. . . . . .iwamiya
Steam Pork Soup Dumplings at Din Tai Fung. 鼎泰豐的小籠包. Beef noodle soup 牛肉麵, vegetable dumplings 蔡包. Not a long wait if you go early. But still a wait. Shanghainese/Taiwanese Dim Sun lunch. . . . .

Lobster Pizza and truffle Flat Bread. Pretty good pizza . . .
The famous lobster at Newport Seafood. . . .
Brunch at ERB . . .
Brunch at Sqirl. Long ass lines. Flimsy outdoor table and chairs. Smelly sidewalk. And crowded street parking. Thought this place was a foo-foo organic, gluten-free, vegan, bland cafe. Yet, I would recommend and return. Everything including the French toast, quiche, drinks, griddle, the rice bowl, and even the cheese was really good. Yummy! . . .
The pig at Guerrilla Tacos. Amazing cod fish tacos, sweet potato taco, and beef taco. We only stopped by to check it out and share some tacos. But we were amazed by the tacos! . . .

Brunch at Paul Martin’s American Grill. Crab cake Benedict’s, short rib hash tacos, salmon fish tacos, trio of ribs, chicken, and shrimp, brioche French toast, and some table biscuits. Pretty good. Great location and great space and roomy bar. Food was ok lah, not memorable. . . .
Oyaku-Don at Suehiro’s. One of my favorite Japanese dishes - chicken, egg, and onion over rice. Simple and hearty. Ramen was also not bad. . . .
Dry Aged Beef Burger at the rooftop restaurant at NoMad. . . .
Affogato at Eataly. A new favorite drink (or dessert). What is it? It sounds like avocado (which is how I will remember it). The Classico is espresso with a couple of scoops of Fior Di Latte Gelato (a sweet heavy cream milk gelato, originally/mistakenly thought as just vanilla ice cream). This sort of Root Beer Float is pretty good. The gelato sweetens the espresso and makes a yummy icey coffee drink. . . . . . . . I was feeling blue with my nails today 🤪
Deviled Eggs, fried chicken, and spicy chicken sandwiches at Crack Shack! Also had a pretty good Bloody Mary. . . .
Bowl Cut at Lawry’s and all the accoutrements. . . .

And finished it off with Cookie Monster ice cream from the Aftershock ice cream truck. I like how it was that crowded and the lines were reasonable. This is the first food truck event I’ve been to in years. Would return. Glad I brought beach and tailgating chairs to kick back on. . . .
Sausage and fries for lunch at Wurstküche in the Arts District in DTLA. Yum! Duck and bacon sausage and bratwurst sausage and large fries. Fries with curry ketchup and Thai peanut sauce. I really dig the crunchy fries. I like the texture more than anything since the fries taste is a bit bland without sauce. . .
Hamburger Steak Set Meal and Soy Cod Bowl at the Delicatessen by Osawa. Pretty good. I will certainly return. Not sure if I would recommend since I don’t want it to be too crowded 😜. . .

Lunch at Midoh Japanese Kitchen in Diamond Plaza in Rowland Heights. Pork Cutlet and Pork Loin Cutlet with Curry Rice, with a side of soup and salad. Love this simple Japanese set. Didn’t know Loin is more fatty (and luscious) than regular cutlet. .

Hangzhou Cuisine at Chang’s Garden 樓外樓. The big fatty pork belly, bitter melon, a big bowl lamb stew, and rice balls. .
Birthday Dinner at Genwa in Beverly Hills. So much food. .
Yummy Taiwanese lunch in Arcadia. One of my old favorites. Beef noodle soup, chicken roll, pork belly on rice, and Japanese beef and onion. The beef and onion on rice is like the Yoshi Noya beef bowl. .
Pad Thai, chicken curry, shrimp rolls, and vegetables at Thai BBQ. Average Thai American restaurant. Noodles were too chewy and the chicken was tough. Not sure if there was suppose to be lemongrass, which was absent. Pretty sure I won’t return. Looks like like they were solid with their fried rice - which other patrons were ordering. Also, the majority of their menu was American style single plates. . . .
My drink, the Boiler Maker, at the Hudson during Happy Hour. Fried cauliflower and Mac’n cheese.
My in-laws favorite Hunan restaurant. So spicy! Pork belly, fish, chicken were good but almost tasted the same with the spicy.
Satisfying breakfast at Jenny’s Kitchen. Chilaquiles with a couple of over easy eggs and pork chili verde. With potatoes. Buddy had the same thing. Cool little place that looks like time has stopped with the classic photos.
Philadelphia Hoagies at Big Jo’s. Ate too much!
Dinner with friends at Sixth+Mill pizzeria. . . .
Cold and hot desserts at Blackball Desserts. But quite pricey. $7+ for that cup of ice with only two peanut rice balls. And $7+ for the hot desserts . . .
Hunan cuisine at Hunan Mao Restaurant. My favorite Hunan Restaurant in LA. Preserved pork, eggplant and green beans, pork belly, steamed spare rib with steamed cake . . .
Pho done easy. . . I choose to have chicken curry with a French roll. I really dig the bread dipping at Golden Deli . . . . . .
Northern Chinese noodles from Lao Xi’er Noodle House. One of my mom’s favorite restaurants. I wish we ordered the mini fried meatballs - totally forgot about that dish. Also saw Merrill Shindler had reviewed this place also. I’m a big fan of Merrill. This place has pretty good authentic noodles with unique knife cut noodles and mini rolled noodles. . . .
Crepes on a Tuesday at Universal Citywalk. I was in the mood for something savory - so I got a pizza crepe. An Italian JianBing as I would call it. 意大利建兵. . . .
Pink Coconut Water from Nutrivsta. Better that water when you’re dehydrated! . . .
Might be the best corned beef sandwich I’ve ever had. Certainly the best in a long time. And I’ve had a long of sandwiches. Right in my backyard at the Santa Anita racetrack - Cravery Has a cool day watching the ponies. Cheering , , and for the exacta in race number 5. Too bad came in last. . . .

Lunch at Plate 38. Pretty decent burger. Unexpectedly good experience . . .
Awesome tasting Japanese Pork Katsu sandwiches from Konbi. Also had the egg omelette sandwich too. Only problem was the crust - I think in Japan, they usually cut off the crust. But Konbi leaves the crust on. Also had the canele, which is not pictured. . . .
Taiwanese Gastropub 印地安. Yummy Taiwanese food with friends and a pitcher of amber bock. . . .
All You Can Eat Korean BBQ in Rowland Heights. OMG Friday night traffic sucks. Quality was pretty good. Beef tongue, brisket, spicy pork, baby octopus, steamed egg, and tofu soup. . . . .kbbq
Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake Ice Cream from Coolhaus Pasadena. Unfortunately, I had to share. 😩😎 . . .
The Godmother at Bay Cities Italian Deli in Santa Monica. One of LA’s favorite sandwiches. But not mine. The bread is almost unbearably hard and rips the roof of my mouth. The meats and cheese were quite good. Make sure you order ahead or look for the premise sandwiches to save time. . . .

Galbi and Soondubu at Young Dong Tofu. The pancake appetizer, grilled chicken, and dumpling soondubu. Spicy . . .
Snapshots in passing . . . . . .
Taiwanese Breakfast - rice porridge with little tasty accoutrements. Makes boring porridge more yummy. Pork floss, Japanese spicy dried garlic, seaweed paste, and wheat gluten with peanuts. Don’t know why they call it pork floss - it is dried shredded pork. . . . .
Andreas Canyons near Palm Springs. Amazing little walk/trail . . .
Taiwanese shaved ice - with condensed milk and soft boiled peanuts. Strange combination, but one of my secret favorite desserts. Too bad most shaved ice joints only offer preselected combinations. I like certain combinations like this one. This photograph doesn’t do justice to this yummy dessert! I can’t be the only one that likes this combination???? . . .
Hunan Chili King - one of better Hunan Restaurants in the SGV. Pork Belly and Taro, Spicy Chicken Feet, Preserved Pork and Tofu, Fish and Tofu Soup, and Stir Fried Spicy Intestine. The soup was very good, especially for a cold rainy night. . . .
