What is Jun Yue? Jun Yue is a small local chain of restaurants, specializing in pork chops, based in Taipei. The restaurants are small and have a fast food quality about them, with the chairs and table attached to the floor. I’ve been to three of the branches, all on the east side of Taipei. When I used to live in Taipei, it was a simple goto restaurant to go to with friends. Not a place to impress a date.
What did I eat? Jun Yue specializes in pork chops – Taiwanese style deep fried pork chops. We each had a modestly sized pork chop, lightly breaded, lightly salted, and chopped up each bone in. With each meal, you can pick either soup noodles or rice with a small bowl of soup. I, of course, choose rice. The fixins are also a treat – which you can add to your meal like – tofu with thousand year old egg, egg tofu, hardboiled tea eggs, and a small array of cold vegetable dishes.
What I didn’t particularly like. Coming from the US, I think I would have preferred a larger portion of the deep fried pork chop. Additionally, I would have also like braised pork over rice, another Taiwanese favorite, as another option. But that’s more my stomach talking. Regardless the food was very good.
The Last Word Jun Yue is what it is. It doesn’t try to be more or less. Is it a place where I talk out-of-towners? Probably not. But is it place I know where I can be happy for lunch or a light dinner, with old friends? Sure.
