Morning Delight Cafe, San Gabriel

Weekend brunch at Morning Delight Cafe in San Gabriel had a couple of the egg pancakes - with sausage and pork. They were out of the tuna ones. Also had the peanut butter toast and a hash brown. Unfortunately the egg pancakes lacked egg - I think it was a small one too. The peanut butter toast barely had peanut butter. I really wanted to like this place but I don’t. I love a good Taiwanese egg pancake 蛋餅 I also like their concept. But at those prices and the execution - I can’t say I like it. The other couple of times I tried to go they ran out of food before they closed, which pissed me off. Anyways. I cannot recommend. And I will not return.

Shin Yeh Taiwanese Cuisine (欣葉), Taipei

Northern Chinese Cuisine tonight on a rainy day. This famous restaurant has been around since the 1940’s and hosted dinners with dignitaries, like George H. W. Bush. They have the traditional cauldron smoke stack hot pot for beef or lamb. They have the sliced pork with baked sesame bread, and they also have their famous dry noodles. I enjoyed their pickled cabbage and pork soup. Great place to first visited about 15 years ago. . . .

Old Favorite Restaurant, Taipei

Lunch at an old favorite with an old friend. I usually go here at least once every time I’m in Taipei. I realize I should have stopped by the one in Tainan - my mistake. My friend and I walked here from their tea shop through the underground shopping mall - Zhongshan Metro Mall. I used to live across the street from the Ming Yao mall in the 90’s. And also lived on Yanji street, about a 5 min walk away. I have always enjoyed the East District 東區. I would also bring family and friends here, too. . . .

My favorite meal is breakfast and Taiwanese breakfast is...

My favorite meal is breakfast and Taiwanese breakfast is one of the best. With the rice balls, egg pancakes, and others. I try to find an egg pancake every morning. I used to have the rice ball with egg, oil curler, and pork floss - every morning but now I realize it is quite heavy and a bit much for me nowadays. You can find these treats almost everyday and almost every other corner. So good. In Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and everywhere in between. . . .

Butcher Jr, unknown

Burgers at Butcher Jr. I had the milk caramel burger, which had a pleasant sweetness that I never experienced before. It was recommend by the cashier. The fries were crispy and the onion rings, too. One noticeable difference was the portion which fit with the typical Taiwanese consumer. Initially I thought it might not be enough, but I realized it was just right. The custom sauces, the honey mustard and the burger JR sauces, both had a slight kick. I’d recommend and would return again. . . .

My 灶. One of the more notable Taiwanese restaurant in Taipei. Included in the Michelin guide - My “Stove” is known for their chicken, which is cooked with fruit. The dipping sauce are pretty good. One thing to note, when you make reservations you need to order this chicken ahead of time - at least 24hrs ahead. These dishes are all home style favorites done well. I dig the decor. This place could be known as one of Taiwanese drinking places since these dishes go well with beer. . . .

ACME Breakfast CLUB, Taipei

Breakfast from Pine & Crane. Taiwanese breakfast is one of my favorite meals. Similar to a western breakfast, it features hearty foods with eggs, rice, and fried pastries. Had the Chive and egg pocket. I don’t remember seeing this in Taiwan as a breakfast item. But I know it is popular in China, too. The thousand layer pancake with egg and chili sauce was surprisingly good. I expected a pan fried and thinner pancake with the egg, called a Dan Bing 蛋餅. I would assume they pre-make the thousand layer pancake, and the Dan bing requires fresh made pancakes. I believe this leans more toward a China version as well. Regardless, I did like it pre-sauced, even though it wasn’t what I expected. And lastly, my favorite Fan Tuan, basically a Taiwanese rice ball. This was the most Taiwanese item visually, taste, and texture. It had the pork floss, preserved veggies, and egg. But the egg, which they included, was a hard-boiled soy egg. I asked for a fried egg, like how it is done in Taiwan. But they said no substitutions. I remember when I was living in Taipei and almost every morning I’d get one of these fan tuans 飯糰 with a fried egg. Anyways. Would I return? Yes. I want to try the other things. Would I recommend this place? Maybe for a few select items. . . . . . .

Accomplice, Culver City

Taiwanese food at Accomplice. Nice little neighborhood bar with Taiwanese food. Only tried fried tofu and the scallion pancakes. But I think the sauce is more Shanghainese with the sweetness. I am more used to a spicier and less sweet sauce for tifu. And the scallion pancakes, not sure of the vinegar sauce dipping sauce. I think this is more of a china flavor. Plus I think the scallion pancakes seems deep fried rather than the traditional pan fried. I get that this catering more to an American palate. Perhaps the chef is from china, instead of Taiwan. Next time I want to the other dishes. Regardless this is a cool car with a good selection of whiskeys. Almost had the full selection of Nikki whiskeys, they were missing the takesuru and days. I had a glass of the buffalo trace bourbon. They also had a really good green cocktail that was spicy. That was really good. . . . . . .

Beef Noodle Soup at 一條龍 PP Pop. I had the Taiwanese spicy Beef Noodle Soup with pickle vegetables. Quite spicy and tasty. We also had the tan tan noodles, beef and tendon soup with vermicelli, and fried pork buns 生煎包. Interesting 一條龍 used to be the name of a restaurant on valley Blvd with the English name Dragon Mark, which was a favorite of mine a long time ago. It appears this place “borrowed” their name. . . . . .

Old Country Cafe, Alhambra

Yet another . . . Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, this time from Old Country Cafe 老鄉親. The broth was ok, not overly flavorful or slightly spicy as one would expect. It appeared to be cloudy, which isn’t a good thing. The soup had an already acidic taste from the pickled mustard greens, in which I would have liked to add personally - depending on my taste. The beef chucks were tender with some nice chewy tendons. But they were smaller in size compared to the other bowls, I’ve had this week. The overall taste was there but not up to par compared to others. The Taiwanese sausage didn’t have the look or taste that Sinabala had - which has the best Taiwanese Sausage around. I would still Vivi at again, but I would probably order something else. Interesting, there used to be an Old Country Cafe, also 老鄉親, on Garfield in Alhambra - which is no longer there. They said they aren’t the same owners as the old one. But it appears they almost copied everything they had, including having a few comic books for people to read. . . . .

Pine & Crane, Silver Lake

Lunch at Pine & Crane. Taiwanese fare in Silver Lake, minutes from DTLA. Couldn’t order in Taiwanese, was skeptical. But was slightly surprised. Shrimp dumplings had good sauce. Noodle texture was right on the Jia Jiang Mian and Dan Dan mian, but wasn’t the right noodle for me - but that’s just me. The luo ruo fan (braised pork over rice) was ok - preferred diced pork belly instead of ground pork. Sausage, cold sides, and drinks is good for the authentic experience, especially the Taiwan Apple Sidra. And enjoyed the scallion pancake 蔥油餅. Yes, I am Taiwanese and I have set a high bar and should. I’m glad to see so many non-Asians discovering, trying, and accepting Taiwanese food. I dig it. . .

JJ Bakery & Cafe, San Gabriel

Awesome Taiwanese breakfast at JJ Bakery & Cafe. We shared the Rice burrito with fried egg and sausage 特製鹹飯糰 (香腸&蛋)what makes this better was the crispy Chinese oil donut. The one at Four Seas was too soggy and not crispy. Then we had the black sesame crisp with fried egg 燒餅夾蛋 This is an old favorite I hadn’t had in awhile. Usually people like it with the oil donut. And then we had the egg pancake 蛋餅. Unlike four seas - the pancake wasn’t as crispy (which is the way I remember it and like it - maybe other people had/liked it a different way). And lastly we had some vegetable noodles 雪菜肉絲麵. This was refreshing and cut through the oil and grease. Next time we need to try Yong Ho to complete the comparison.

Four Seas, Taipei

Taiwanese breakfast with Rice Burritos 飯糰, egg crepe roll 蛋餅, fried radish cake 蘿蔔糕 and salted soy milk 鹹豆漿. I love the rice burrito, but I like the fried crullers to be more crispy. The egg crepe was was yummy and salted nice, but unfortunately the crepe was too crispy - I like it to be little softer. Yes I am picky but I liked these versions when I was in Taipei. But with 四海 Four Seas - I like it enough to return since it might be one of the better Taiwanese breakfast in SGV.

Beef noodle soup 牛肉麵, minced pork noodles 雜醬麵, fried pork chop with rice 排骨飯, Beef ball soup 貢丸湯. Yummy classic Taiwanese dishes. The beef noodle soup is ordered by almost everyone. Enjoyed the hearty beef broth, which is so bad for my gout. The pork chop has. Nice crisp crunch with a bit of sweetness. So bad but so good. I think this is one of the better Taiwanese restaurants in the area.

Shin Yeh Taiwanese Cuisine (欣葉), Taipei

Taiwanese street food - . We had the beef Ban Mien (noodles) - 牛肉麵. The broth was rich and slightly spicy - very good. Noodles were interesting but good - soaked up the broth. Loved the pickled mustard greens, could use that on everything. Wish is was hotter (not lukewarm). Then had the Rub A Belley with rice - braised pork over rice 滷肉飯. The chunks were too big and wish for more seasoning like dried onions and shallots for depth. Not sure what creamed corn was there for. The Taiwanese sausage was yummy. I remembering that we used to play dice for sausage on the streets of Taipei outside of the clubs. The oh Ah Jian (oyster egg omelette) had nice spicy kick. (I would guess this is a tough sell as well as the next one). The favorite dish was clearly the century egg tofu salad 皮蛋豆腐 when you get this, make sure you mix everything up to merry the flavors. I wouldn’t change anything with this dish. Am I too critical - maybe. Would I come back - yes. Sorry for the wall of txt. . . .
