Basqueria in Malibu. The famed sandwich shop at Surf Canyon. Today’s sandwich was a chicken with nice crusty bread. Sebastian said he made about 90 sandwiches and he was sold out in about 25 minutes. Crazy. Nice selection of tinned seafood. Picked up some Spanish scallops.
Dai Ho restaurant, Temple City. Taiwanese beef noodle with pickled veggies and mustard greens. Also had a side order of sliced beef. Dai Ho’s version leans toward the spicier side with a rich broth and QQ noodles. Been around awhile. Always a consistent offering. Too bad they’re only open for lunch.
Wagyu Butcher in Torrance. A bar only Yakiniku restaurant in omakase style with wagyu beef. We got the $70 Butcher’s menu. We had carpaccio, beef tongue, short rib, A5 wagyu, plus others. Finished with a curry rice and dessert. Can’t forget the upcoming gout attack. Was it worth the price and pain - yes. One thing I noted and I could be wrong - most of the meats were slathered with some sort of marinated - hopefully by design, rather than by covering up something. I would have preferred to see the marbling more closely. Though I did like the cook/grill-yourself aspect to get the tenderness that you would want
Cocary in Monterey Park is an old school Taiwanese hot pot restaurant. It looks as if it has been around for awhile, and is has, since 1987. The hot pot also has a unique grilling plate to sear meats. With its self serve plates of raw meats and veggies with refrigerators in the back - this place is bustling with patrons grabbing this and that. Diner vibes with cushy booths. I will definitely come back. Don’t expect high end, but expect nostalgic comfortness.
Run Bing 潤餅 - a Taiwanese Wrap or Burrito. Wrapped in a crepe like skin - a little sweet and savory, this meal in a hand is usually a celebrated during QingMing Festival. But our Ranch 99 in Arcadia offers it a year round. Packed with veggies, some egg, sauce, and either a chicken, pork, tofu, or beef protein. It is yummy and not to be missed. I don’t know of any other place that might have this in the Southern California area. If you do, please let me know.
Just tried Midoh at Sawtelle Place, and I’m hooked. Hamburg steak is one of my favorite Japanese dishes, and they nailed it. Don’t overlook this spot, it’s worth finding. .rowlandheights.official
Stinky tofu at Tofu King 臭豆腐大王 in Arcadia. Taiwanese food of the home style variety. Along with the stinky fried tofu, we had the sliced beef (served cold which is a traditional Taiwanese appetizer), beef noodle soup, rice noodle soup, a Rou yuan (a meat ball with rice). All was pretty good. Problem is. They close at 7 and they accept cash or Zelle - not a fan of. I’d try again. . .
Japanese Sandos from Niko Sandi had the egg salad and the pork cutlet. Also had the takoyaki. Would definitely go again and would highly recommend. Small shop tucked in quaintness of Brentwood.
Taiwanese lunch at Pine and Crane in dtla. We absolutely ordered way too much.
Weekend brunch at Morning Delight Cafe in San Gabriel had a couple of the egg pancakes - with sausage and pork. They were out of the tuna ones. Also had the peanut butter toast and a hash brown. Unfortunately the egg pancakes lacked egg - I think it was a small one too. The peanut butter toast barely had peanut butter. I really wanted to like this place but I don’t. I love a good Taiwanese egg pancake 蛋餅 I also like their concept. But at those prices and the execution - I can’t say I like it. The other couple of times I tried to go they ran out of food before they closed, which pissed me off. Anyways. I cannot recommend. And I will not return.
Diamond Jim Cut at Lawry’s The Prime Rib the Yorkshire pudding, creamed corn, and cream spinach. Great meal. It’s had been a minute since I was last here. I’m hope next time isn’t as long.
Had a chance to visit Lou’s Café in Westwood thought it was really good. I kinda like this interior better than the Ktown one I like the counter. It’s kind of cool to sit at a counter. This time we had the chicken rice and also the Hong Kong style toast. The toast was really good at inside. It had condensed milk, which is sweet. It’s actually a really tasty dessert. Again I would recommend and I would visit again. Just like the ktown one. Amazingly they have a nice following with small menu.
