Fish Market Fatty Pork Rice 魚市爌肉飯, Changhua Taichung
What is 魚市爌肉飯 魚市爌肉飯, loosely translated as the Fish Market Fatty Pork Rice, is a small lunchtime restaurant in the small town of Changhua, near Taichung, Taiwan. Little towns like this one are dotted all over Taiwan, featuring great places to eat. I don’t think I would have enough time in my life to visit all of them. Therefore, relying on friends to show me around (thank you Miss A), is important as they are my guide – I know I wouldn’t be able find this place.
What did the Thirsty Pig gobble? When the name and sign says 爌肉飯 (Fatty Pork Rice), you know what you got to order. It’s like going to Mastro’s and ordering chicken (which I initially did). To explain it, you see really have to see it. The pork is stewed hours on end with the meat, skin, and fat, curling up – needing a skewer to hold it in place. The soft rice, a a special steamed manner, is layered on the bottom of the bowl. Then a small ladle of the stew is dripped over before the pork is placed on top. And that’s it. No special garnish or extra seasoning or anything else. The key is spices they add in the stew that slowly marinates the pork. You can add sides, like egg for NTD 10, Tofu and Eggs for NTD 20, or shredded bamboo shoots for NTD 20.
The Last Word The good thing is, that this place is located close to the high speed rail and perfect for a to go meal on the train. Its no wonder that Miss A, had to rush us to get there. With a fast turnover, this place does great business.
