Lukang 鹿港 Day Trip, Taiwan
Lukang 鹿港 is a small town near the city of Taichung. It has a seaport which faces toward the China province of Fujian, from which many of the people are from. I recently made a visit there to see friends and the Taiwan Lantern Festival.
The town has a unique history in which it could have been one of the largest cities in Taiwan. In the 1700′s and 1800′s, Lukang was the 2nd largest city in Taiwan, after Tainan, and just before present day Taipei. With the burgeoning seaport, Lukang was an important city with its closeness to Fujian. Yet, the city leaders choose not to allow the railroad through, thus leading to the commercial decline over the years. Yet this blessing in disguise, has allowed Lukang to maintain its historic buildings and structures, as when it was in the olden times.
Food is also quite yummy here as well. They have fabulous street food – which cheap, too. I couldn’t eat as much as I wanted, since I boast limited stomach space, much to the eagerness of my mouth. One of my favorites was the Taiwanese breakfast with egg pancakes and rice balls.
Lukang was also selected to have the honor of hosting this year’s Taiwan Lantern Festival from February 6th to the 19th. They won this year’s distinction out of 6 other townships. Every year, they pick different towns – like 2011 was Maoli and 2008 was Tainan. I’ll show more pictures of that later.
