Brunch at Madison, Shanghai
One of Shanghai’s decorated and awarded restaurants in the past 12 months, Madison opened to with a flurry of excitement from foodies, bloggers, and expats. After finally finding some time to go, I was looking forward to my virginal Madison experience.
Raves were oozing about Austin Hu, hailing from renown Gramercy Tavern of New York, about his American dish creations. I think with his Chinese Taiwanese background – which should help in communication with his staff and vendors, he is able to convey his ideas and direction properly. Coupled that with his experience in the US, Madison produces fine American culinary delights. With Lunch and dinner as cash cows, it was his Weekend Brunches where he made his mark. In a city where International fare is as diverse as it is anywhere, it’s known that it would not be easy to please not just Americans, but also Europeans and those crazy folk from down-under.
On this lazy Sunday, our group made our way to Madison to eagerly try brunch. We started and shared the scotch duck eggs and home made pork sausage. Not your usual breakfast eggs and sausage, but just something a little more with flair. You could see and taste the care it took with the home made sausage and the use of the duck eggs (with the stronger yolk flavor and delicate cooking nature).
Then we shared breakfast egg sandwich, the burger, and french style scrambled eggs. Gosh, I do love eggs. Each of these were quite good, with the notable difference of the french eggs. I love runny scrambled eggs, especially this French style was particular yummy with the pastry to help soak it up. I had to have the burger, as I was conducting my never ending review of burgers in Shanghai. This burger was cooked medium with the inside pinkish, as all gourmet burgers should be. Hey Austin, good burger!
On some Sunday’s, Madison also creates unique menu feature different cuisines and dishes. When you get there, ask for his Sunday specials.
