“All You Can Eat” (AYCE) in Taiwan and China is translated as “Eat till Full” (吃到飽). Not as attractive sounding as the American English moniker – it seems a bit unappealing. Yet, these types of restaurants are popular in Taiwan and China.

In the city of Taoyuan, near the airport, 石頭日式炭火燒肉 Charcoal Yakiniku Japanese stone seemed on this night the most popular restaurant in town. With its spacious high ceilings and modernist decor, the festive atmosphere is conducive for large parties eating and drinking.

It seemed like the food was endless, as it was for AYCE, with Japanese hibachi or yakiniku. It almost seemed like Korean BBQ done Japanese style. Sake and beer was flowing, though not included in the AYCE bill, within our large two table party. Meats, vegetables, and seafood arrived raw, and soon was in our bellies.

I don’t remember much of any particular dish, except for a dessert that you grilled. A thin sliced sweet rice cake was placed on the grill, to be puffed up. Then you would dip into a sweet peanut powder, which would coat the browned candy. You bite into it, which presented an almost chewy texture with the sugarness from the peanut powder and the rice cake.
