Niko Sando, Brentwood
Japanese Sandos from Niko Sandi had the egg salad and the pork cutlet. Also had the takoyaki. Would definitely go again and would highly recommend. Small shop tucked in quaintness of Brentwood.

Katsu at .la.official had waygu and pork katsu. A5 Wagyu Tenderloin Cutlet Set Meal And the Kurobuta Pork Loin & Tenderloin Cutlet Set Meal. With the scallop cutlet topped with salmon roe. The Wagyu pieces were practically raw then they provide a hot stone to sear the beef. Each beef piece was quite tender and had a great mouth feel. Would order again. Make sure you open up yelp and get in line before you arrive - otherwise your wait is way over an hour.
Japanese cuisine in Pasadena. Yakiniku. The best thing we had was the beef bone marrow fried rice. The grilled beef was very good. Great service. Would return again. . . . 🐮
My buddy got the ramen which I think he said was ok. Nothing special. Next time I would try the ramen. They have a Ying yang bowl in which they would have 2 different broths. I think it is gimmicky, but I would try next time. . . . .official
Sushi! Favorite neighborhood sushi joint - Sushi Kisen. The Traditional Edomae Style Sushi Lunch with 13 pieces of sushi for $40. Deluxe Chirashi Lunch was well balanced for $35. Sushi Kisen is unique since they use red vinegar on their sushi rice. . . .
Tempura from at their latest location in Pasadena. Tempura with udon noodles, soba noodles, and their tempura sushi. People were lining up before they opened. Yummy! Had tempura at their South Bay location and this place does not disappointment either. Would gladly visit again, just hopefully without a line. . . .
Japanese BBQ at Hibiki in the SGV. Had to check out this place. Cool decor. Good service. They grill the meats for you, in case you don’t want to or don’t know how to. But I think they grill it for you to make you eat faster to increase the turns. Anyways the meats were good. Had varies cuts of wagyu and even had beef tongue, which could have been sliced thinner. The wasabi cucumber was interesting - initially eye opening and almost repulsive since you’re expecting something refreshing. The wasabi kick wakes you up and is almost addicting. I will try to make it. Anyways. I would recommend and I might return if I didn’t have to wait. Luckily only waited 5 mins. . . .
Bone marrow and beef at NIKU X. . . .
Curry lunch at Had the Wagyu stone bowl and the tonkatsu pork curry. The combo gave us miso soup and fries and cucumber salad. Yummy. Ate too much . . .
This was my friend favorite yakitori joint in Taipei. Low key and good environment with good food. Just the right price that young kids wouldn’t go to, so it had the right crowd. Outstanding service. . . .
Japanese food in Taiwan, is arguably the best outside of Japan. I doubt anywhere else has the diversity, quality of fish, and abundance of great Japanese restaurants than Taiwan. This neighborhood Japanese restaurant does not disappointment, located in the east district 東區 of Taipei 大和 is a favorite of an old friend that I’ve known for over 49 year, our moms went to college together. It was great to catch up with him and his family and of course his mom. . . .
Wagyu Beef Yakiniku at Zonzen Yakiniku 燒肉中山. One of the best meals I’ve had in in Asia. Outstanding beef - marbling, flavor with just salt, and tender buttery texture. Decor was cool. They even have a robot server. . . .
My buddy’s birthday dinner at 破壞者珈琲食堂. Excellent food and good times. Good to see an old friends and make new ones. Cozy Japanese restaurant smack dab in the middle of Taipei. We had countless courses of food and wine. I’d certainly return and would recommend. . . .
Japanese style bbq - yakiniku. High quality meats and good times with old friends. Various grades of beef, chicken, and pork. The chicken rice was good, which turned into a nice flavorful rice porridge. Located just north of the Songshan airport in a newish shopping mall, Noke. I believe I saw this place was reviewed by the Michelin guide. . . . .04
Late night eats at an old favorite in a new location. The katsudon - pork cutlet with eggs and onion over rice. I usually get the oyakudon, but tonight I wanted something different. Unfortunately, it was quite salty - too salty for me. So, after the bill was paid, I told the server and owner. They welcomed the feedback and interestedly, they said feedback is great since it comes from customers that care. The poles that don’t care, and have issues, they just won’t return. I know I will return. And I also recommend. Suehiros was part of my college life. I will always associate Suehiros as part of little Tokyo. It is too bad they couldn’t stay at their 1st street location. . . .
Kaiseki dinner at I-Naba. Excellent service and great experience. Lots of the dishes were quite good. The miso infused cheese, fish ball, soba noodles, green mochi were stand outs. Unfortunately the sushi rice, the some of the sushi was not. I’ve had great kaiseki experiences in Asia. So my expectations were quite high. I would love to try the set menu for the Sushi I-Naba next time. . . . . . . .
Shabu Shabu. All-You-Can-Eat at Kushi Shabu in DTLA little Tokyo. Haven’t Ben to Kushi in years. Had a great time. Great service. Would go again. And recommend. . . . . . .
Late night munchies in Alhambra. Glad they’re open late. Also glad they have skewers and ramen. . . . . . . .restaurant.gr
Shabu Shabu at Kagaya. Wagyu Beef set course at arguably the best Shabu Shabu restaurant in LA. Glad to have had it before the owner retires. But I understand the new owners are taking over right after. . . . . .
Japanese noodles, mazesoba from Nagoya. Dry noodles with toppings. Toppings include ground pork, scallions, seaweed, poached egg, soft boiled egg, garlic, and chasu. Also had some fried chicken. After mixing, the noodles were melted together with poached egg. It’s an interesting texture that may not appeal to all. Sort of slimey. I had a side of the soup. I prefer noodles in a broth. . . . . .
Roast beef set at Wadatsumi in Torrance. Japanese restaurant that specializes in steak and beef. They also have sushi bowls, too. Popular lunch and dinner spot. Get here early. . . . . .
Omakase at Z Sushui. Great meal experience at a long-standing favorite. Hadn’t been there in a long time. I think Z Sushi is one of the better Sushi restaurants in the SGV. . . . . .
Breakfast at JiST cafe. . . . .
Part 2 at Sushi Gen. Here’s the salmon, miso cod, beer, octopus cucumber salad, and ankimo. . . . . .
Sushi at Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo in DTLA. Part 1. This is my favorite place for sushi. Got here real early just to get a seat at the sushi counter. Had uni, Spanish mackerel, halibut, snapper, yellowtail, sardine, tuna belly, and giant clam. I might have missed one or two. . . . . .
Outdoor dining at Gozen Shun. Simple Japanese lunch in Pasadena. Tonkatsu and miso Black Cod, with tempura and karage. . . . . .
Japanese dinner - premium sushi set, amberjack collar, tuna rice set, and ankimo monkfish liver. Nice variety at Tonchinkan. Will certainly try their other dishes next time. The uni was not bad. The sushi was also good. The ankimo was favorite too. . . . . .
Fired Chicken at Kouraku by Juicy and tasty chicken fire roasted. Glad to also hear that Kouraku, the Japanese Denny’s in Little Tokyo is alive and well. . . . . . .
Japanese sandwiches from Pillow Talk in Pasadena. Egg heaven and the Okonomiyaki sandwiches. Yummy. I love eggs. . . . . . .
My favorite Sushi Restaurant- Sushi Gen. Kaz is the best. Used to drink with him when they allowed it. Had many good times before and had a great time last night. Happy Anniversary! Had Uni, Hirame, Toro, Ama-ebi, Hamachi, Saba, and a few others. . . . . .
Tonkotsu ramen at King of Ramen. Pork and soft boiled egg was really good. One of the better ramen joints in SGV and Pasadena. But the chicken karage was not so good. . . . .
Got a second chance to have curry with katsu. This time delicatessen by Osawa did not disappoint. Curry was flavorful and the katsu was ideal. The seared cod and sukiyaki was also very good as well. We also had the chicken karage, which was gobbled up quite fast. Yum yum. Glad this place is not far from home. Thanks to for introducing this place to us . . . . . .
Ramen. Had the black kotteri ramen, with fatty rich broth. It had a good taste/flavor. But the texture, yes inside the soup, had a grainy mouth feel - not too pleasant. Unfortunate the inari has warm rice. I’m not a fan of warm rice in my Inari. Won’t return. . . . . .
Oyaku Don, Udon, and Saba. Suehiro is Little Tokyo’s Japanese Denny’s. Love this place. Can always good Japanese comfort dishes. They good rice dishes, ramen, and other dishes. Open Late. But parking sucks - only paid lots and barely any street parking available. . . . . . .
Another Ramen Shop popped up in Arcadia. DashiWa Ramen. The broth and noodles were good. I had the black garlic tonkotsu ramen and it was pretty good. Unfortunately the chasu tasted oily and didn’t have the texture I was expecting and was cut really too thin. But at least they did the broth and noodles right. The inari unusually had warm rice - which in my book is a big No-No. And the chicken karaage was too greasy. Unfortunately, I can recommend, not will I return. But it appears that DashiWa Ramen will be fine without me, since they cater to the local lunch crowd. But if you do go, just have the their ramen, no need for their sides. . . .
Japanese Sandwiches at Pillow Talk in Pasadena. Pretty good sandwiches. I like the hot tamago egg sandwich the best. The egg salad sandwich with the hard boiled egg was also very good. Heck anything with egg I will probably like. The avocado mango sandwich was surprisingly not bad - and I don’t crave avocados. The tiramisu drink was interesting - probably won’t order it again. Other than that I like these sandwiches and would gladly return and recommend. Who cares what and all those others say if they feel Pillow Talk allegedly copied Konbi certainly didn’t invent these sandwiches, they were one of the first to copy them from Asia. . . . .
Garlicky Tonkotsu Ramen at Hironiro Craft Ramen. Nice char on the chasu pork. Rich flavorful and garlicky flavor. Spicy, too. The shoyu ramen looked good too. The fried chicken appetizer was juicy. Ate too fast. . . . . .iwamiya
Blue fin tuna toro sushi. Spicy tuna hand roll. Avocado hand roll. gyu bowl and chicken katsu bowl. Asked for sashimi and they gave sushi. Asked for an oyaku don, they have a chicken katsu don. The toro was good but not as fatty as I would have expected. . . . . .
Good times with old friends at Inko Nito. Great venue and location. . . .
Oyaku-Don at Suehiro’s. One of my favorite Japanese dishes - chicken, egg, and onion over rice. Simple and hearty. Ramen was also not bad. . . .
Ramen! Ichiran In New York City. . . .
Hamburger Steak Set Meal and Soy Cod Bowl at the Delicatessen by Osawa. Pretty good. I will certainly return. Not sure if I would recommend since I don’t want it to be too crowded 😜. . .
Dinner with the wife at Daikokuya Ramen in Little Tokyo in DTLA. Had the spicy miso ramen, chicken egg onion rice and California Rolls. . .
Lunch at Midoh Japanese Kitchen in Diamond Plaza in Rowland Heights. Pork Cutlet and Pork Loin Cutlet with Curry Rice, with a side of soup and salad. Love this simple Japanese set. Didn’t know Loin is more fatty (and luscious) than regular cutlet. .
Awesome tasting Japanese Pork Katsu sandwiches from Konbi. Also had the egg omelette sandwich too. Only problem was the crust - I think in Japan, they usually cut off the crust. But Konbi leaves the crust on. Also had the canele, which is not pictured. . . .
Yakitori at Shin Sen Gumi in Gardena. Haven’t been here in years! . . . .
Japanese fried chicken karage 🍗 🐓 🐔 very crunchy with lots of choices for dipping sauces. Yummy . . . . .
Tonkatsu dinner at T.O.T. Restaurant in a Little Tokyo. Teishokuya of Tokyo - T.O.T. I remember the first time I went a long long time ago. We had the pork loin tonkatsu and a potato croquette. Also had a tuna bowl with udon. And couldn’t forget the fried chicken wings. Yum! . . . . .
Happy Hour at RA Sushi Bar Restaurant. Uni Sea Urchin. . . . . .
Lunch with Shanghai friends, who now live in Irvine. A good hearty bowl of ramen on a hot summer day! The standard Hakata Ramen. . . . .
Drinks with friends at the newly opened Sake Dojo in Little Tokyo in DTLA. .real.mike.gin
Ramen for dinner at Tatsunoya in Old Town Pasadena. Wife’s favorite ramen joint. I thought it was pretty good this time. I also added the cheese, which she thought was overkill, with the rich fatty broth. Maybe it was. . . .
Sunday lunch at Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata Ramen & Udon in Irvine. Had the standard Hakata Ramen, Cod Roe Udon, small side of the Beef & Rice Bowl, and the small Minced Chicken Rice Bowl. Ramen was good but slight too savory for me. And that’s saying a lot since I like savory. I should have tried a udon at this location but I wasn’t feeling adventurous. . .
A chilly windy day in Had some hot and hearty had the karaka - the spicy noodles, the shiromaru- the classic pork broth, and the akamaru tamago - rich fatty pork broth with egg. Yum. The thin noodles were just right. Even had extra firm noodles
Old school Shabu Shabu at the OG. Open for 27 years
I can’t believe how cold it is in NYC. This is the fourth ramen shop we’ve tried. I had the Triple Pork Triple Garlic Mazemen and wifey had the spicy red chili ramen. We started with the Japanese Fried Chicken. All three had big bold flavors, which I believe is the “go big or go home” thought. The chicken felt Americanized, along the lines of something orange with the sweet crust. I liked the spicy red chili ramen more than my selection with the hearty broth. I did like the big chunk of pork and the soft boiled egg. Next time, I’d like to try the more traditional ramens.
Yet another hot bowl of ramen noodle soup at in Brooklyn. Also had the boneless chicken, fried chicken wings, and a spinach salad. The boneless chicken was better than the chicken wings. The spinach salad was surprisingly good too. The noodles, the Ganso shoyu ramen, were ok, while the broth was much better.
Lunch we had the momofuku ramen, spicy hozon ramen, and a couple of pork buns. I liked the pork belly with the shredded pork shoulder in my ramen. My wife liked the fried chickpeas in the hozon. We both enjoyed the crispness of the pork belly in the bun. Wife was ok with the noodles.
Ramen in . We had the tonkatsu ramen and the I shoyu ramen, each with unique broths and ramen noodles. Tonkatsu had thin and more firm noodles with a heavy rich broth. The I Shoyu ramen had a wavy slightly thicker noodle with a little shoyu flavored broth. On a cold night, I believe the tonkatsu is better choice. And any other day, the shoyu would be a fine choice. Didn’t get to try the ox tail ramen (only 20 bowls a day). But did try the stuffed chicken leg with foie gras, which was very interesting with subtle flavor and texture. Thanks for video from But the 1 hour wait sucks. But on a cold winter night the hot soup is just right
An Okinawan lunch at Habuya in Tustin, CA. Nice udon with good broth flavor, as expected. The pork katsu - was good and strangely moist, from being pre-sauced coating. The pork belly with poached egg is as decadent as it looks. But the rice was cooked with too much water - too sticky. Next time I’m gonna try the ramen.
Tonkotsu Ramen and Spicy Miso Ramen. Broth was good noodles were better. But the portions could have been slightly bigger. But I was full after 🐷
Shabu Shabu beef quality was good. The broth was meh. The kombu was ok. The popular spicy miso was a strange combination. My wife likes it. I think my mom would like this place.
One of my favorite ramen shops in LA. Super crowded on a Saturday night. It strangely they are now the Spirit Airlines of ramen, which means everything is a la carte. Their basic ramen is just noodles, broth, green onions, ginger, and a couple of slices of pork. Everything else, like typical the typical egg, bamboo shoots, corn, seaweed, etc is extra. Sure they have preset combinations - which is so American. Anyways.m, I still like the place, but hate the wait. Check out their big festival at the beginning of September st their Gardena location. I think we might just go. .restaurant.gr

This is the last in a series of Japanese restaurants. I started earlier this week with Yoshida Sushi, Shin Sen Gumi, Cafe Hiro, and now The Curry House.
Asa Ramen is a late night local favorite. The idea of having ramen, alcohol, and being open late is a great combination. There aren’t too many places like Asa Ramen.
