Lu Ro Fan at Da Lai Kodate大來小館, Taipei
Lu Ro Fan is part of a main staple in Taiwan. Like noodles, this rice dish, is simply made with fatty pork and rice. For a quick fix, I know I can pick up a bowl(or two), if I am hungry late at night, or if I don’t have much time, and is one of the primary things I have at a Taiwanese restaurant.
Da Lai (Kodate – I have no idea what Kodate means) is located near the Shita area of Taipei. Shita or Shida is the National Taiwan Normal University – which is a Teaching or Education University. 大來小館 means “Great for Kodate”, but I think the real meaning is “Small Museum Diner”. But I could be wrong.
Anyways… we were strolling after dinner and came upon 大來小館. My friend told me that they were famous for their Lu Ro Fan. As full as I was, I knew I couldn’t walk away without a taste. So, for only NT$ 50, I got a bowl, or in this case, a box to go.
As soon as I got home, via taxi, I, hungrily opened the bento box and proceeded. I remember the lady hollering, make sure you mix it before you eat, so I proceed to mix the bit and pieces of pork goodness of fat and meat. Then, not with chopsticks mind you, but with a soup, I, then shoveled a large scoop into my watering pie-hole.
That’s some good shit!
It was savory and luscious from the fat. It was oily from the lard, but expected as usual. The meat, an abundant amount for the portion, was seasoned just enough. People don’t think much of Lu Ro Fan, except it is as a requirement for full meals of other dishes. For me, tonight as well as other nights, I could live on just this.
Though only just a small box, I know I should have tried other items on their menu to get a better idea of their offerings.
