What is Southern Barbarian Southern Barbarian is Yun’nan restaurant in the heart of the Luwan district of Shanghai. Southern Barbarian, located on Jinxian road, is one of a few cool restaurants, bars, and lounges. This street is one of my favorite streets in Shanghai. Among the smattering of Shanghainese, Cantonese, and the few spicy Sichuan and Hunan cuisines, Southern Barbarian is a refreshing alternative.
What did I eat? Yun’nan cuisine, noted for their dishes with lamb, also features dishes with chicken and beef. Tonight we feasted on their famous Chili Beef on toothpicks with crispy fried mint leaves, 38 RMB. If you like beef, this is one of the more unique beef dishes I have ever had. The large yellow Niuganjun mushrooms from Kunming – which almost looks like tofu – absorbed the flavors from the garlic and bell peppers. We also choose the famed Cross-Bridge Noodles with pork and chicken. This dish looks as if you picked and choose whatever was in the refrigerator and threw them together to make a noodle dish. And the last dish, which was recommended by everyone and their mother, was the Yun’nan ham with goat cheese. The ham, almost like a salted aged ham blended well with the creamy goat cheese – a very nice interesting combination.
What I didn’t like Other than the smallish portions, there isn’t much that I could find wrong with the food. But the interior of the restaurant could use a big refresh, which seemed worn and dated. The air in the restaurant seemed to be heavy with the grilling of the foods, as evident with a film of grease that just floated right on each table.
The Last Word Southern Barbarian is a nice choice for a different dining experience. They also feature a huge selection of beers. What I would do with Southern Barbarian is create a huge beer garden featuring these great Yun’nan dishes with a large outdoor seating patio.
