Hunan Village Flavor, Shanghai

By The Thirsty Pig

When you’re at the new restaurant, and its up to you to order (since you are known to be the expect foodie), aside from the heavy pressure, I always try a few of things to make sure our group gets the best dishes. I tend to ask the waitresses what’s good, what’s popular, and what they like to eat themselves. Sometimes, I’ll walk around and look at what other people are dining on. Otherwise, you’re playing, what I call, blind-man’s menu bingo. At Hunan Village Flavor, I could say we got pretty lucky with the dishes we ordered, with my strategy.

The Hunan Flavor Potato Cakes, the Chop Bell Pepper Scrambled Eggs, and Seasoned Pork Chop were the highlights of our meal. I wanted to like the Potato Cakes, but unfortunately, they were a bit bland. The Scrambled Eggs were quite good, with some white rice. But most of all, I enjoyed the Seasoned Pork Chop. The pork was juicy and succulent – of course. You can tell they are trying a little to cater towards foreign expat community with the English on the menu’s, but not without a couple of mistakes.

You really can’t miss this restaurant since it is located in the heart of the French Concession or Xuhui District with the bright neon lights. Miss P didn’t want me to do a write up about this wonderful little restaurant. She was afraid that it could get too popular. She liked the quaintness so much that she gave it a new name – Cafe Wulumuqi.

This restaurant is a secret find of a friend of mine, who asked me not to blog about. It is quite yummy. She doesn’t want this place to become too crowded… but too late!
