Mapuwu, Shanghai

By The Thirsty Pig

Late night, Korean, sobering, traditional are just some of the words to describe Mapuwu. Located on the edge of the Changning district, one of the best things about Mapowu are the late night hours – till 5am.

Though there are grills on each table, you won’t find many people grilling the famous Korean BBQ here. Personally, I am not a big fan of DIY Korean BBQ, nor hot pot, nor anything you have to labor over yourself to eat. Though I go to a lot of hot pot restaurants – if you read my past hot pot entries you’ll notice my lack of enthusiasm for DIY meals… ok, enough of my rant.

Again, you don’t come here for the BBQ, but you come here to either pre-party (drink & eat) or to sober up (after 1am or so). You’ll find some great Korean comfort dishes here. Many, for the non-Korean experience, won’t know about such as Kimchi fried rice, sliced beef stew, kimchi pancake, ox-tail soup, etc.

Though I am biased, I love Korean food, it is truly one of the masterful hearty stomach filling cuisines. Though you won’t find complex and delicate flavors in the an overpowering kimchi dish.

Look for this sign. Late at night, it should be one of the only places around that is still open

The large cover of the Mapowu menu. Inside it features lot so pictures, so, if you can’t read, you can just point - like I do.

The apps…Every single Korean meals starts with the panchan - the appetizers. Usually served cold or room temperature.

Tofu stew - called Sundubu jjigae. I just call it sundubu.

Sundubu is served quite spicy and bubbling hot. Unfortunately, I have burned my tongue almost every time I have had this dish.

Seolleongtang or just beef stew is one of my favorite Korean dishes. I remember having this non-spicy dish years ago in Korea-town, back when I was in school in LA.

Seolleongtang is a great dish for those who can’t handle spicy. Unfortunately, I might be in this boat.

Kimchi Pancake. This is another favorite dish, usually served as an appetizer.

Kimchi Fried Rice! Yummy!

Mapowu’s version of Kimchi fried rice is good, but not the best I have had. I wish it was a little more spicier.
