Shanghai Slim is your classic unabashed American steakhouse. Located in the Sinan Mansion, Chef Adam Levin, from New York Style Steak & Burger, helms this classic surf & turf restaurant with with the 14 days dry aged USDA Prime Angus Rib-Eye.

On this night, we had the Very Big Rib-eye, the Osso Bucco, and Spaghetti Meatballs. The rib-eye is a nice chunk of meat that is one of my favorites. The bone allows for more flavor in my humble opinion. With the great even marbling, it also retains good moisture and tenderness. At Shanghai Slim’s, they fly all their meats on a regular basis. The USDA Prime is not just for show.

With the nice grilled criss cross marks, I was salivating and chopping on the bit to get my teeth into this steak. It seems, when we encounter great steaks or meat, we are reduced to our primal animalistic tendencies. At least I know I was. I know it was certainly one of the best steaks I have ever had.

Next week shared the Osso Bucco. The bone in veal was quite a site with the large bone and luscious tender meat, literally falling off the bone, before we were at it. You could almost eat it without a knife. Secretly, I liked the Osso Bucco more than the rib-eye. But I didn’t let me friends know it. I liked the tenderness and the subtle flavors.

The Wagyu meatballs with Spaghetti was the last entree we almost finished. The large tender meatballs were quite tasty as well as soft and tender. They weren’t too hard packed. But they weren’t boasting in flavor. From my experience, some of the best tasting meatballs were ones that included a mixture of beef, pork, and even lamb.

On top of these entrees, we also had the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes with the rib-eye. The cobb salad also wetted our appetite as well. But it was the baked lobster mac and cheese that stole the show. This cheesy concoction was one of the better dishes of the night.

Compared to other more well known steakhouses in Shanghai, Shanghai Slims I feel can stand up on its own.
