老昌美食 Lao Chang Restaurant in Harbin

Lao Chang is a restaurant chain based in northern China. They feature a pancake-like food that you stuff with vegetables and meat, which is tasty as hell. After a day of sightseeing, Lao Chang was suggested by our local Harbin driver.

Shortly after ordering, you are presented several little dishes. With all sorts of diced vegetables, minced meat, and sauces all round. Each of these enticing dishes could be similar to tapas. Yet one of the small plates is the thin soy wrapper or rice paper. I enjoyed the rice paper wrapper more then the soy one. But I think the soy one held better. Almost like Korean BBQ, you would take the thin square skin in one hand and pick the different veggies and meats in another and to be placed on the wrapper. Then dash a little sauce, then you’re done. Ready to eat!

There’s different types of meats, ranging from pork, lamb, chicken, and beef. Since we were in the north, we choose the fatty pork. The pork is presented julienned with fat, like french fries. There was also lot of vegetables – which was almost like a filler and to accentuate the flavors of the protein. The purple colored red onions, the diced green onions, and stir fried potato cubed slices. We also had some scrambled eggs with onions. I really enjoyed the eggs.

Lao Chang is a nice little restaurant that I could see successful in the US with the D.I.Y. interaction. I also hope to find a chain in Shanghai.
