Myeongdong 명동 of Seoul
One of my favorite areas in Seoul was Myeongdong 명동. This bustling shopping area was lively and crowded at all times. Given that it was close to Mr. B’s apartment, I went there a few times by myself.
i would compare Myeongdong to Taipei’s Ximending District, Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay, Shanghai Nanjiang Road or Tianzifang, and Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station. There are lots of clothing stores with primarily American, Japanese, and local brands. I saw the Gap, Uniqlo, and other clothing stores. In addition, I noticed quite a few cosmetic and skin care shops. One I particularly liked was the Face Shop. Most likely stolen the “shop” moniker from the Body Shop, the Face Shop is a Korean origination. But recently I have heard from Taiwanese news that Korean skin and face products have caused blueness – and that’s not a good thing… .Anyways…There are also lots of street food stalls, restaurants, and coffee shops. It appears I couldn’t escape McDonalds, KFC, and Starbucks. But I did try Kraze Burger which I thought was pretty good.
The small alleys and young & good-looking bring excitement the few times I came to Myeongdong. This place seemed like an outdoor mall on steroids. I am not sure there is any place like this in the US. I was also able to try a couple of really good restaurants in the area – in which I will post soon.
