Shanghai Uncle 海上阿叔
The steady stalwart, Shanghai Uncle, is the go-to place when I come to Shanghai on short trips. My business partners usually leave full and happy.
With a contemporary decor and furnishings, Shanghai Uncle provides an excellent atmosphere for large groups. You’ll see large tour groups stroll in for Shanghainese feasts. The large colorful menus with bold pictures make you want to order everything. I also noticed that they had a large seafood selection to go with their sushi bar. Not sure they they have a sushi bar. But anyways. . .tonight, it is just me & Mr. B.
We ordered the spare-ribs with pine nuts, cabbage with bacon, and Shanghainese diced rice cake. Simple meal, enough for 4 people. The spare-ribs is the only dish I will consistently order every time I come to Shanghai Uncle. The tender pork meat rips off the bone with slight chop stick grasps, with sauce drippings. With the necessary rice, you engulf the addicting sweetness ever so slowly. It no wonder why I love this dish. I don’t remember too much about the other dishes, except I liked the small diced rice cakes.
One thing I should mention. Rice goes great with these types of meat dish, since it dilutes bold flavors. Yet in China, in some places, rice is served at Restaurants at the end of the meal – to fill you up. Rice is accompanied at the end, in case you haven’t had enough. I like rice to go with my meals. So, when in China, at some places, if you ask for rice, you should ask for it to come out immediately.
I’m sure there are more reputable Shanghainese restaurants and other cuisines, but Shanghai Uncle will always be the old standby if all else fails.
