Itoya 伊藤家, Shanghai
With some classmates, I recently had Japanese at Itoya located in the busy district of Luwan. This location is ideal, since there is a subway station located just beneath the shopping center, of Central Plaza.
The three of us, wanted some privacy to hang out and smoke, so we got a private room, which was a minimum of RMB 200 a head. But with this minimum, we got the all you can eat lunch special. I am not a big fan of All You Can Eat Japanese, but I didn’t want to argue. We were there to hang out and discuss our class assignments.
I was chosen to pick and choose our dishes, since I was the food connoisseur of the group. I don’t necessarily like that title, since I know what “I” like, but not necessarily what others would. Anyways…I picked a couple of grilled fish, a cod, some sushi & sashimi, tonkatsu chicken, diced beef cubes, chicken skin & cartilage, chicken wings, beef tongue, and some other stuff. We also had some beer. It was actually a pretty good deal for the amount of food we ordered.
But I was disappointed with sushi & sashimi selection. I didn’t really see much that I liked except for the Inari – tofu skin sushi. The chicken skin was a bit chewy. I enjoyed the fried chicken cartilage. The tonkatsu chicken was favored by my Korean classmate – Mr. Y, as well as myself. Mr. S liked the grilled fish, which I didn’t care for much. The diced beef cubes, on a hot grill plate, was actually pretty good. I think we all agreed that the beef tongue was excellent.
I think other than the sushi & sashimi, the lunch was ok. Though I had a good time hanging out with my classmates and drinking beer.

What to Order: Chicken Katsu What not to Order: AYCE – I wouldn’t suggest getting the all you can eat.
