CoCo Curry House, Shanghai
Curry has origins from India, yet, is arguably perfected in Japan. House Foods Corporation has spread the Curry Gospel to the US with the Curry House.
Curry, derived from a spice powder, is served as a sauce to compliment and enhance meats with rice. This thick yellowish or brownish sauce has the consistency of a thicken ketchup. In addition, there are varying levels of spicy heat that you can select. Theoretically, a restaurant can prepare several different pots of curry featuring different levels of spicy heat. Pork, chicken, and seafood are the popular proteins that go with curry. My personal favorite is fried pork cutlet with medium to high spicy flavor.
I usually order the same thing when I go to Curry House or Hurry Curry, both in LA – pork or chicken cutlet with a medium or high spicy flavor. I like a face sweating curry sauce – since it makes me feel more somewhat engaged, physically. The tender and lightly breaded pork absorbs the curry sauce like a sponge. The sauce, by itself, is hearty, thereby needing the starch from the white rice. This simple meal is also typically accompanied with a small salad to help offset the heaviness.
To me, CoCo Curry House represents a familiarity that I can relate with from my LA’s Curry House and Hurry Curry. As a safe and simple choice, Coco Curry House is a place I’d return to again for lunch.
