Tian Tian Seafood Harbour 天天渔港 (Tian Tian Yu Gang ) is one of the largest chain restaurants in Shanghai, but also China. With Hong Kong roots, there are locations in Beijing, Shenzhen, as well as Shanghai. Specializing in Cantonese cuisine, seafood at dinner and dim sum at lunch, Tian Tian epitomizes the delicacies from Hong Kong.

Chinese restaurants in China, with Chinese food 中餐 (zhong can), that are high end and fancy, feature large ballroom-like entrance hall lobby. Additional, these palaces have aquariums, just off the lobby, of live fish and sea animals to pick and choose for the upcoming meal. Most opulent restaurants will have at least a couple of floors of dining rooms and private rooms. These private rooms may also have their own restroom and server(s). Service and details in these restaurants often rival some of the better hotels. In small towns all around China, you’ll find these magnificent restaurants featuring their local cuisine. In the future, I will be documenting more of these great dining establishments.

Tian Tian is like any other big upscale restaurant, except that they expanded to a large chain. Their particular speciality is Hong Kong style dim sum and seafood. Dim Sum 点心 (diǎn xin) is quite popular in Shanghai. With such a large population of Hong Kong transplants Cantonese food is done very well.

Today, in our private room, we had dim sum for our large group. We had the typical spring rolls, suei mai steamed dumplings, pork spare ribs, fried radish cakes, and steam rice crepe with shrimp. But we also had some other non-regular dim sum items like the roasted and bbq dish with pork, duck, and chicken, crispy shrimp with sweet cream sauce, singapore noodles, and frog soup. The lunch was good. I think they almost cater some of the menu items for the local tastes and palates – with the frog soup. The sweet cream sauce is also something for local Shanghainese – since their cuisine is more sweet.

I particularily liked our private room, though we didn’t have our own bathroom. These rooms are cool, since they allow you to be as loud as you want, drink as much, and smoke, as well.
