Afternoon Tea at 寶茶Baocha, Taipei

Baocha is a tea house with all the traditional details you’d expect. A serene setting just meters away from the busiest street in Taipei. This oasis features speciality Chinese teas as well as unique ornamental pieces.

As you walk in, with the slight sounds of the trickling pond with koi fish playing, it’s as if you’ve been whisked away. The attentive staff, with their 6th sense, can feel what kind of tea is right for you without asking. Experienced beyond her youthful years, Ms. H, the proprietor, has perfected the art of the tea setting. Wood themes echo the establishment providing a calm and enjoyable environment. Baocha also serves light snacks to go along with their great teas.

On this particular day, I am enjoying a chilled green tea, that has been brewing and iced for four hours to perfection. You’d pause, just for a moment, that you should be back in the office or at a high powered dinner, but you’re just steps away from your own reality. I like this tea chilled, just as much as a pipping hot one. Yet, it is more for my American palate to have cold drinks, as they would correctly assume. As new and old customers walk in, they instinctively know what each’s preference.

Left to my own, I notice the brass figurines pair of kids swinging. Then I look over to see the little pigs statuetes smiling. Then the colorful hand blown glass birds catches my eye, as well. You don’t find these gifts anywhere. Ms. H’s knack for finding these treasures is apparent in every detail of the tea house. Imaginative tea sets with loose leaf teas in brightly red packaging is Baocha’s signature style.

Tea is a wonderful gift for the young and the old. Baocha is more than just a tea shop. Not far from Sogo, Baocha tea house is more than worth the detour off the beaten path.
