Ho Chi Minh City is a place where it has seen hard times in this past century. With different occupants, from the French, to the American, and to the communists. Only recently, with the trade embargo lifted and the economy starting to pick up, that Ho Chi Minh City has started to see an emergence of prosperity. With this economic growth we see luxury hotels like Intercontinental Asiana Saigon riding this wave.
Of the few 5 stars in the city, the Intercontinental Asiana Saigon strives to set itself apart with connivence for tourists, business, and fun. Though it may not be the best hotel if you are looking to relax at a resort location. I should also note that the amenities and comfort are all lavish, as it goes without saying.
The rooms, 305 rooms and 18 suites, feature a couple of nice touches that I want to mention, first the imitation Herman Miller Eames chair. This replica offers a bit of style to an otherwise ho-hum room. Even though it isn’t the real thing, it’s still pretty cool. Also, I do like the iHome iPhone/iPod dock, though I know it is almost a standard nowadays that you’ll find in better hotels. The bathrooms also feature a large oversized bathtub – which I unfortunately didn’t have time to use.
The restaurant and lounges, which I also used, were spacious. I personally like large spacious areas, I don’t like the feeling of claustrophobia, though I don’t have that phobia. The downstairs buffet restaurant – Market 39, had a nice spread featuring a good selection of western items and Asian & Vietnamese items. I liked the Pho noodle bar. The Library and Purple Jade, the lounge bars, were also nice. The Purple Jade, the 2nd floor lounge, is a cool little drinking spot, but unfortunately with the 2nd floor location and the competition from the Park Hyatt’s 1st floor lounge – 2 Lam Son, with a street entrance.
Yet, the Intercontinental Asiana Saigon’s best traits are its location – which might be a notch above the Park Hyatt’s. For tourists, it is walking distance away from the famous Notre Dame Cathedral and the Saigon Post Office. It is also within 5 minutes drive from Ben Thanh Market, Reunification Palace, and War Remnants Museum. Business wise, the hotel is located in District 1, which is the noted city business center. Additionally, the airport is within 20 mins drive.
The Intercontinental Asiana Saigon is the choice hotel for Ho Chi Minh City, if you are looking for trip for city tourist trip or for a business trip.
